Micael Santos Couceiro, PhD

Welcome to my webpage!

Here you will be able to see pieces of my life, experience, qualifications and publications.

ABOUT ME

My name is Micael Couceiro and I am an experienced professional in Robotics. I obtained the BSc, Teaching Licensure (+ 2 years) and MSc degrees on Electrical Engineering (Automation and Communications), at the Engineering Institute of Coimbra (ISEC), Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC). In 2014, I obtained the PhD degree on Electrical and Computer Engineering (Automation and Robotics), at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra (FCTUC).

Since 2007, I have been conducting scientific research in several areas besides robotics, namely computer vision, sports engineering, economics, sociology, digital media, and others, all at the Artificial Perception for Intelligent Systems and Robotics (AP4ISR), Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR), in collaboration with many other groups, namely RoboCorp, CIDAF, RoboticsLab and SRGE. This resulted on some dozens of scientific articles in international impact factor journals, book chapters and international conferences.

Besides being currently a post-doc. researcher at AP4ISR, I have also been invited for lecturing, tutoring and organization of events (e.g., professional courses, national and international conferences, among others), both in the public and private domains. I am also one of the founders and the CEO of Ingeniarius, Lda.

Casually playing music (guitar), drawing and doing sports. Strong appreciation for both game and film industries.

EDUCATION

As most researchers, I spent the majority of my life studying (and, somehow, I still do so).  I finished high school in 2002, completing back then the professional course in electronics, at ESMS, concluding the 18th year of my life without caring much about school. I then applied to ISEC, where I was accepted, and so it began.

Electrical Engineering (Automation)

Additional course: CS-PLC1 – GRAFCET and Ladder programming.

Awarded with a Merit Scholarship from the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC) in 2005/2006.

2002 - 2006

I started higher education before the Bologna process was implemented in Portugal. Meaning that most engineering courses in polytechnic schools comprised of a 3 year-bachelor program, followed by 2 more years (known as "Licenciatura"). My first year was quite hectic as I spent most of it working at Renault (CACIA). Adding that to my lack of interest during the first year, I spent 1 extra year to finish my BSc. However, and mainly due to the several hands-on projects inherent to polytechnic schools, the field of automation and robotics soon grew on me. My new passion at the time led to some interesting academic results and I was awarded with 3 merit scholarships, being considered as one of the best students from all IPC schools.

By the time I was finishing my "Licenciatura", the Bologna process stepped in, and I then concluded the newly created MSc program, focused on automation and robotics in industrial systems. By the end of the course, I had already about a dozen scientific articles in conferences and a couple of them in impact factor journals.

To further deepen my scientific knowledge, I applied to the PhD program at FCTUC. I was supervised by Prof. Dr. Rui Rocha (FCTUC) and Prof. Dr. Nuno Ferreira (ISEC).

You can have access to all this information, and even more detailed, in my CV (in both Portuguese and English languages).

WORK EXPERIENCE

Studies in Portugal, as in most of the world, are not free. Although my parents funded my academic life until the end of my Teaching Licensure degree, I knew that this was as far as they could go (economically speaking). Also, having mastered the foundations I needed by then, it was time to build my own path and learn from the "outside world".

RENAULT, Lda.

Machine Operator

Manufacturing and quality control of gearboxes.

2003 - 2003

As I said, my "official" work experience started at Renault, during my first BSc year. After that, I've dedicated myself to my studies until the end of my "Licenciatura". I then started tutoring for higher education students.

During my Master studies, I worked as a researcher at IPN. Back there, the objective was to fully develop an intelligent transportation vehicle. My main tasks were the PLC programming (Siemens SIMATIC S7) and control of the vehicle (adaptive PID control of both speed and direction). I've only worked in the first part of the project, which was then concluded and officially released at the Rovisco Pais Hospital.

I've been an invited lecturer at ISEC a couple of times between 2009 and 2011, in both CET courses (level between high school and higher education) and BSc courses, mainly focusing on robotics, automation, microcontrollers and digital systems. In the process, I've been instructor and organizer of both Pense Indústria ("think industry") and F1 in Schools initiatives, at CTCV. I was there since the beginning of 2009, until the end of 2010, in which I was able to supervise the work of high school students for 2 consecutive years, teaching SolidWorks, aerodynamic concepts, robotics, and so on.

Lecturing at ISEC and working at CTCV lasted until the end of my first year of PhD studies, in which I attended some PhD disciplines in the process (namely cognitive vision, intelligent control, cooperative robotic systems and detection, estimation and identification techniques). Only then I applied to a PhD scholarship granted by FCT, that was awarded, thus requiring full exclusivity to my PhD studies (ref: SFRH/BD/73382/2010).

During the 3 following years I've dedicated myself to my PhD, working "unofficially" with other researchers from across the globe and from different fields, such as remote sensing, medical imaging, sports sciences, and others. Although most of my research was carried out at AP4ISR, ISR (UC) (as it currently is), I had the opportunity to work as an invited researcher during 3 months at RoboticsLab, MACS-HW, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Patricia Vargas.

In the very beginning of 2014, together with 2 longtime friends, I've founded a small technologically-oriented company, named as Ingeniarius. The success of this company has been my main goal since then.
