Post Conference: Full Day Tour to Alcobaça, Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha (July 3, 9:00 AM)
Departure at 9.00am to Alcobaça, a
Roman settlement named Helcobatie previously
inhabited in the Neolithic. It was conquered
from the Arabs by the first Portuguese King
in 1147. Its most representative monument
is the Abbey of Santa Maria of Alcobaça,
built by the monks of the order of Cister
in 1152. This monument is the biggest example
of the proto-Gothic style in Portugal. Facing
the Church's main altar are the magnificently
stone carved medieval sarcophagus of the
King Pedro I, who died in 1367, and of his
lover Dona Inês de Castro, made a Queen
by him after her death.
Continue towards Óbidos, one of the
most charming Portuguese villages, completely
enclosed within the ramparts of the medieval
castle. Walking visit, with entrance by the
18th century arch covered by glazed tiles
(azulejos), of its bright white small houses
along cobblestone narrow streets, flower
pots on window-sills, Gothic Renaissance
Churches, in particular the beautiful Church
of Santa Maria.
Lunch at Pousada de Óbidos. Proceed
to Nazaré, the most famous fishing
town in Portugal. A superb view is enjoyed
from the "Sítio", a belvedere
on top of the hill. In the streets you may
observe women still wearing the traditional
7 skirted costumes. The tour will then proceed
to Batalha to visit the wonderful Monastery
of Santa Maria da Victória. This monument
built in 1388, to celebrate the victory against
the Castilians in the Battle of Aljubarrota
in 1386, is the most beautiful example of
the first Portuguese Gothic architecture.
