Full Day Tour to Conímbriga, Buçaco and Luso (July 2, 9:00 AM)
Departure at 9.00am to Conímbriga, situated 15 kms south of Coimbra. Initially
it was inhabited by the Celts but in the
end of the 2nd century BC it was taken by
the Romans who left there their traces. The
excavations took place in 2 different periods
from 1929 to 1944 and from 1964 to 1971.
Close to the ruins you can find the Monographic
Museum, with an exhibition of articles found
during the excavations and equipped with
a laboratory for the conservation of pieces.
The exhibition is a selection of mosaics
collected at the end of the 19th century,
sculptures, inscriptions, table and kitchen
objects, coins and other small utensils.
All these objects help us imagine the lifestyle
of the inhabitants of the city, since the
Iron Age until the Christian Age.
Lunch at a Hotel in Luso. After lunch the
tour will proceed towards the Buçaco Park which is a majestic forest where stands
the royal palace of Buçaco, of Neomanueline
architecture. The palace was built on the
19th century and is nowadays a luxurious
hotel. Here we can also see a Convent from
the 7th century AC that belonged to the Carmilite
Nuns and where we can still see the church
and its private rooms.
Throughout the mountain we can find several
small chapels, known as the penitentiary
eremites, which date back to the 18th century.
These mountains were the site of Wellington's
great triumph over the Napoleonic army. Continue
to Luso a small town on the way to Buçaco,
famous for its thermal springs. Return to
Coimbra at aprox. 17.00.
