Full Day Tour to Coimbra (July 1, 9:00 AM)
Departure at 09.00am. The city of Coimbra with Visigoths and Roman vestiges was finally
conquered to the Moors in 1064 by Fernando
Magno. Dominating the early from the top
of the hill, there is the vast building of
the ancient University, one of the oldest
universities in Europe, dating from 1292.
The Tower, dated from 1728, is the exlibris
of the town. One of the most important rooms
of the University is the Library from the
18th century whose walls are covered with
shelves in gilt carved wood. Another point
of great interest is the Saint Michael's
Chapel, excellent example of the Manueline
Art. The Tour proceeds to the Machado de
Castro National Museum, which was the Episcopal
residence from the 12th century until Portugal
became a Republic in 1910. We should detach
the crypt entrance dating from the Roman
period with a stone dating from the year
305 proving that Coimbra was known as Aeminium.
Proceed then to the Old Cathedral. Built
in 1160 it is a fortress-like temple in roman
style and even though it has suffered changes
and restorations one should demark the gothic
cloister. Lunch at Hotel Astoria. After lunch
visit the Convent of Santa Clara-a-Nova dated
from the XVII and XVIIIl centuries, the most
important features being the gold leaf retable
on the high altar and the silver urns which
holds the undefiled body of the Saint, Queen
Isabel. End of the Tour at aprox. 17.00.
